Wisdom Wednesdays: Before the Cannon Struck

In a couple of weeks, the Jesuits will begin to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the date that St. Ignatius, their founder, was hit by a cannonball in the battle of Pamplona.

On the surface this seems like a very strange thing to celebrate until you know Ignatius story of reflection and conversion during his recovery period.

This was a turning point in Ignatius’ life when he met the saints and Christ crucified — and realized that he could live a different narrative than the one he had written in his head thus far.

I suggest we too can acknowledge reflect on and celebrate those iconoclastic, painful moments in our own lives when we too realize that the way we have been defining ourselves and our journey needs evaluating.

Let’s do this with Ignatius and Ignatian spirituality during this year of celebration.
