Advent 2024: The Holy Family as a Migrant Family

As we begin the Season of Advent and await the coming of Christ, Pope Francis invites us to consider the lives, struggles and challenges of migrants and refugees and reflect upon how the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph was a migrant family escaping King Herod and fleeing for their lives.

How can we see Jesus in migrants now and welcome Him today?

“Migrants are our brothers and sisters in search of a better life, far away from poverty, hunger, exploitation and the unjust distribution of the planet’s resources which are meant to be equitably shared by all.” – Pope Francis, World Day of Migrants and Refugees, January 17, 2016

Consider reading Harvesting Freedom, a book by Gabriel Allahdua about his life as a migrant worker in Canada. He has also been a guest on our Essential But Disposable Labour podcast.

“’Where is your brother? His blood cries out to me,’ says the Lord. This is not a question directed to others; it is a question directed to me, to you, to each of us. These brothers and sisters of ours were trying to escape difficult situations to find some serenity and peace.” – Pope Francis, July 8, 2013

“… it is not just about migrants. When we show concern for them, we also show concern for ourselves, for everyone; in taking care of them, we all grow; in listening to them, we also give voice to a part of ourselves that we may keep hidden because it is not well regarded nowadays.” – Pope Francis, May 27, 2019
